Amanda Donovan

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHOTHERAPIST

Accredited with IAPTP and EAIP

Co-founder of Safe Steps

Amanda is an accredited Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and co-founder of Safe Steps. She brings over 25 years of experience in the field of mental health supporting children, young people, adults and families.

Amanda's early career in psychiatric nursing and later work in adult psychotherapy gave her a deep understanding of how emotional distress can shape people's lives over time. These experiences strengthened her commitment to supporting children and young people while they are still developing, when understanding, care, and safe relationships can make a profound difference.

Her work focuses on helping children and families make sense of difficult feelings and experiences early, supporting healthier emotional development and resilience.

Amanda holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychiatric Nursing, a PG.Dip in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy (Adults), a PG.Dip in Play Therapy, and an MA in Humanistic and Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy.  She is currently accredited with the IAPTP and EAIP, and is Registered with NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland).

Additional training in Theraplay, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR, TIST, and a year-long programme in the clinical application of Polyvagal Theory are models of therapy that continue to shape and inform her practice.

Amanda integrates both directive and non-directive approaches to therapy, adapting to the needs of the child in the room. Her focus is on creating safety, fostering connection, and supporting growth through relationship.

For Amanda, the idea of relationship extends beyond the therapeutic relationship - it encompasses the child's relationships with others, their relationship to both internal and external experiences, and, perhaps most critically, their developing relationship to their own embodied sense of Self.
